Help
How can we help?
Short, plain answers about scanning, the Family plan, credits, and your data. Still stuck after reading? Email us, a person replies.
Scanning & quick-add
How scanning works (Personal)
Snap or upload, check the details, save, or just type it. How scanning and credits work.
How do I scan a receipt?
Snap a photo or upload a PDF; kvar. extracts the merchant, date, total, and line items, and you confirm before saving.
What if the scan gets something wrong?
Every field is editable before you save, money and dates are always yours to confirm.
Can I add expenses without scanning?
Yes, quick-add reads plain text like "Lidl 18.20 groceries", and it's free even at zero credits.
What can I scan?
Photos (JPG, PNG, HEIC) and PDFs.
What happens when my credits run out?
Scanning pauses until they reset next month or you upgrade; tracking and quick-add keep working.
How do I track which card I paid with?
Add your cards in Settings → Cards, just a name and a colour, no card numbers. When you scan or add an expense, a card picker sits beside the budget picker: choose the card you paid with, or "No card". Set a default in Settings so it's pre-filled, and change it any time from the receipt's "Paid with" line.
Billing, plans & data
What does the Free plan include?
Everything a budget spreadsheet does, forever: a sheet view with targets and a cash-flow summary, unlimited tracking with quick-add that understands plain text, full insights, exports, multi-currency, and you can import your existing Excel budget in one go. Receipt scanning is the part you pay for, and every new account gets 30 days of it free to start.
Can I bring my existing spreadsheet?
Yes. Upload your Excel budget (or a CSV) and your categories, targets, and past transactions come across in one go, you see a preview before anything is saved, and importing the same file twice never duplicates anything.
Is there really a free trial?
Yes, automatically. Every new account gets 30 days of Personal at signup: receipt scanning and 1,000 credits, no card required, nothing to opt into.
What happens when my trial ends?
Nothing dramatic. You move to the Free plan: your data, budgets, and tracking stay exactly as they were. Scanning waits until you upgrade, and if you subscribe during the trial, you aren't charged until the 30 days are up.
How do credits work?
Every receipt scan costs 10 credits. Personal includes 1,000 a month (about 100 receipts); Family includes 5,000, pooled across the household (about 500). Credits reset monthly, and we'll warn you well before you run low.
Can I switch plans later?
Anytime. Move between Free, Personal, and Family, or between monthly and yearly billing, whenever your needs change; the price adjusts on your next cycle.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
It stays yours. Cancelling moves you to the Free plan, not out of the product, you can keep tracking, export everything, and we never sell your data or share it with anyone outside the product. Your private budgets stay private to you by design.
When does the Freelancer plan launch?
Soon. It adds expense reports, CSV export, tax/VAT categories, and accounting integrations on top of Family.
Which currencies do you support?
kvar. is multi-currency and locale-aware from day one. Set your default and scan receipts in any currency.
Family
How the Family plan works
One subscription for up to five people, how to add them, what's shared, and what stays private.
How many people can join the Family plan?
Up to five in total, you and four others.
How do I add someone?
Settings → Household & members → Invite a member, then share the code, QR, or link. They sign in and join free.
Do family members share my receipts and budgets?
You choose. Set up a shared household budget everyone can add to and see, and keep your own private budgets alongside it. When you enter a receipt you pick which budget it goes to, so a shared grocery run lands in the household budget while a personal buy stays in yours. Private budgets are visible only to you; receipts you add to a shared budget are visible to everyone in the household. The plan and the monthly credit pool are always shared.
Do members pay anything?
No. Only you, the owner, are billed; members never see plan screens or card forms.
What happens if someone leaves or I remove them?
They move to the Free plan. Their private budgets stay theirs; what they added to a shared budget stays with the household, and their scanning stops drawing from your pool.
How are the 5,000 credits shared?
One pool across the household (about 500 receipts a month); the per-member split is in Settings → Billing.
Can my household share a card?
Yes. As the household owner, add a card in Settings → Cards and mark it a family card, then everyone in the household can tag expenses with it. Personal cards stay yours alone. The privacy rule still holds: put a family card on a private budget and only you see that expense, sharing follows the budget, never the card.
